About Toto
The band Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group took their name from the Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every musical style.
The third album by Toto, Turn Back, was an unfulfilling success in 1981. However they came back with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two songs that were hits with the title track and Roseanna. The album and the tour made them a household brand across the globe.
After a hiatus of a couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. It is a departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and also includes some heavy rock. This album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.
In the course of recording the fifth album, the group loses its manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to change their name and create a new album with a new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, is now replacing Fergie Frederiksen as lead vocalist. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After several weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and goes on to record their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa during a recent tour. Toto's touring lineup includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
Music
Toto is an American rock group that achieved their biggest success in the eighties. The band was founded by experienced session musicians The band has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide.
The first toto album was the self-titled Toto, released in 1978. It was a huge success that catapulted the band into international fame. Since then, the band has released fourteen albums that are also hits.
In 1984, Toto wrote their first and, to this day only, movie score for the film Dune. It was a huge project, and the entire group was required to participate. The album that came out, Kingdom of Desire, was another record that was a huge success. After a world tour, Bobby Kimball quit the group. He was replaced by Fergie Frederiksen, formerly of Le Roux. The band continued their journey with their fifth studio album, Isolation. The album contained a variety of hits, such as "Stranger in Town".
After Isolation, Toto took a break from the spotlight and went on hiatus. The break gave each member of the group the chance to pursue their individual projects. In 1996, the group was reformed to tour and make an album. This was the first time the original members took to the stage together for over 10 years.
The next year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time that all of Toto's original members appeared together on stage at the same time. Following this, the band disbanded once again. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to perform a benefit for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time that all original Toto members appeared performing together for over 31 years. In addition to the original members, keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.
Tours
Toto has remained one of the most popular rock groups for more than three decades, releasing huge hits like "Rosanna," "Hold The Line,"" and their 8X-platinum hit, "Africa." With a wide range of influences, ranging from progressive rock to world rhythms to jazz and soul The group continues to delight fans with their energetic arena rock.
Despite their acclaim the group had to face a number of setbacks in their later years. In 2002, drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group, and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence for health reasons. Drummer Shem von Schroeck took over, but the band was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes. In 2008, a string lineup changes and a series of disappointing releases prompted Toto to end their tour for a period of time. The group returned to touring in 2012 following the release of their album 40 Trips Around The Sun.
The album marked a return to their best form, and the tour that came with it was a sold-out event in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
Toto's music remains as relevant as it was in the 1970s and 80s, gaining new fans with each new generation. Their success has made them an everlasting fixture in pop culture. Live performances by Toto are always packed with energy and excitement.
